Aqua-life at Atlantis

So I said that Atlantis was kind of like a big aquarium. Here's how!

A pond of large sea turtles greeted us by the waterfall.

Sting rays swam all around.

Hammerhead sharks swam in a bigger pool.

The sawfish like the more shallow water. (And they actually are a type of ray).

We watched a feeding session.

She fed the sting rays.

She threw food to the fish in the water, and they went crazy! You can see that there is still some of the fish food in the air, and the fish were already splashing around to get their own meal!

To feed the sawfish, she threw fish towards them. They got them under their "saw-nose," and then they vacuumed them up! (See the dead fish here?)

This is a nurse shark.

And here are his friends!

That was the first half of the aquarium - the above ground part. It was cool to be able to see all of that as we were walking from our room to different pools and restaurants.

The rest of the aquarium part was underground, and it was more aquarium-esque, you might say.

This is a cownose ray.

I think he's quite pretty, from the top!

Here's another angle.

Here is a large manta ray. His "wing" span, (I'm sure that's not the correct term, but he did "flap" them to swim around!) was probably at least 10-12 feet. There were two manta rays this large in the tank.

These guys were funny because they stayed right there just about all the time! Sometimes a little guy would try to come and join them, but he was never cool enough, I guess, because he would eventually swim away. But these guys almost never budged!

The eels were funny! They hid the majority of their bodies in the display, and they just sat there opening and closing their mouths. There were some fish in the same tank, and it seemed like the eels were hoping that a fish would just swim in their mouth!

This is a big grouper!

Here's a school of fish.

Moments before I snapped this photo, the fish was faced the other way, so it looked like he was staring out at Jordan. I was too slow to capture the moment, though!

This was pretty interesting. It looked like this seahorse was birthing another seahorse!
